Folk song means, the song, which are used by the people, who are living in the village site for the purpose of, reveal their tiredness or stress, during the usual works & at the time of works in working stations. Also means, the songs which are sung in the festival period. There are different types of songs in the life span of a man from his birth to death and they are lullaby, love duets and entertainment songs. Further there are Street Plays, Tribal Songs, Villupaaddu, Theme Plays and Lament Songs, Folk Rhythms of different types of organs like Naadhaswaram, Glerinet, Drums and other instruments.

And also, it has a great contribution to make a good co-ordination with in the labors in the time of replanting the paddy from the nursery. As well as, fisher mans are also used this songs when they pushing the boat (says “Kaddu Maram”). These songs mostly sound the thoughts of village people about the current situations.

Although, these songs are carried out via oral from generations to generations, they are kept their own texture without changes. At the same time, the songs are easily come to the general uses without notifying the composers. And also, The folk songs are traditional productions.

Characteristics

Some researchers say, folk songs not depends on their birth, they depends on their spread. That means, a poet, who has a good writing knowledge, write a poem if the poem easily reach the villagers and become a normal use they also can mention as folk songs.

It’s attractive music, the pitch range which can easily sing any persons even they are not practice well,  the tune, and the casual & story telling play are the speciality of this songs. Another one speciality is it’s intemate with the rutine works. Further it haven’t a proper records due to they was sung by ancient people. In these songs, it has a character, that is, it is used accoriding the situation.

Categories

The folk songs can be called as Nattu padal (நாட்டுப்பாடல்), themmangu (தெம்மாங்கு), paamarajanakaanam (பாமரஜனகானம்), pothujanakanam (பொதுஜனகானம்) and kiramiyapadal (கிராமியபாடல்). The ancient people might  be used different sounds to express their happy & sad feelings at time of the language before arise. After some time the language was came to help to express the feelings. So, in here the first song could be formed. One person sung the first line subsequently, another one sung the next line. At the same time some lines were sung by all. Finally the song was formed.

According the situation & purpose, the folk songs can be classified in various types.

Village Music

Village music means, a type of music, which is composed spontaneously by the normal villagers. This can be called as folk songs.

Folk Songs in Medias

In earlier times, Mr.& Mrs.Navaneethakrishnan-Vijayalakshmi spread folk songs via tape records and Programs. After Mr.& Mrs.Kuppusaami-Aniththa do this work in T.V Programs & film songs. Paravai Muniyamma, Kollankudi & Karupaayi are also given a great contribution in films & Radio programs, which are related to the Tamil Folk Songs.
